ENIGMATIC BANK OF ENGLAND PROOF OR SPECIMEN
Lot # 6764. England. Bank of England 1873 Issue Proof or Specimen. Dated January 28, 1879. London, England. P-286 Unlisted. 5 Pounds. Specimen banknote with red "SPECIMEN" overprint in signature block. Serial number "26/D 14549". Small (Plate?) number "2" below vignette. Paper appears to be unwatermarked. There is one vertical fold down the midlleand the lower left corner has an extremely light bend at the corner, otherwise the note would be a crisp AU-Uncirculated. This was originally part of the ABNC banknote reference collection. Unlisted as a specimen in the SCWPM. The note catalogs issued $1750 in good and $4000 in fine condition. It is unpriced in this format. Extremely rare and early (From a U.S. point of view) Bank of England note. Unique in archive.
EXTREMELY RARE IF NOT UNIQUE RUSSIAN
GOVERNMENT TREASURY BILL OR NOTE.
Lot # 7713. Russia. Russian Government Treasury Bill - Issued and Uncancelled - Still Negotiable? 30-April 1917. P-Unlisted. 500,000 Pounds Specimen Treasury Bill from the Russian Government to either another government or entity. Extremely rare issued. "Serial No.5". Red English imprinted revenue on upper right for 250 Pounds. Text states "On 29th, April 1918 (without days of grace) the Russian Government promises to pay to______or order against surrender of this Treasury Bill the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Pounds for value received....London, 30th April 1917, By Delegation of the Ambassador Of Russia In London. Payable at Mess.rs Baring Brothers & Co. Limited, London".Ornate counterfoil engraving on left with BW&C. imprint. I am not certain if this Treasury Bill represents a loan to the Provisional Russian Government of 1917 or to the Soviet "Lenin Government" that was its successor. This could be considered a short term "Government Bond" that was negotiable. A group of specimens of this note have been offered in auction recently. This is the first issued note seen and by the low serial number, we do not expect to find very many more.
